Rear Admiral Adam A. Chamie

Assistant Commandant for Response Policy (CG-5R)

Rear Admiral Adam Chamie assumed the duties as the Coast Guard Assistant Commandant for Response Policy in May, 2024.  In this capacity, he is responsible for the development of strategic response doctrine and policy guidance for all Coast Guard forces.  These policies encompass seven of the eleven operational maritime missions including law enforcement, search and rescue, maritime security, counterterrorism, defense operations, marine environmental response, and emergency management and disaster response programs.

In RDML Chamie’s previous assignment, he served as the Coast Guard’s Chief of Congressional and Governmental Affairs.  In this role, he was the Commandant’s strategic advisor for legislative affairs and was responsible for coordinating all engagements with Congress.

Raised in Deep River, Connecticut, RDML Chamie earned a Bachelor of Science in Management and received his commission as an Ensign from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1996.

From 2019 to 2022, RDML Chamie served as the Commander of Coast Guard Sector Key West, Florida.  He previously served on Capitol Hill from 2017 to 2019 as Liaison to the House of Representatives.

RDML Chamie served on six Coast Guard cutters over 11 years, patrolling the waters from the Bering Sea to the Eastern Pacific, the Caribbean Ocean, and the Arabian Sea.  RDML Chamie commanded three cutters:  CGC VALIANT in Mayport, Florida, CGC KEY LARGO in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and CGC MONOMOY forwarded deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Between sea tours, RDML Chamie served as Comptroller at Training Center Cape May, New Jersey, as Afloat Assignment Officer at the Coast Guard’s Personnel Service Center in Arlington, Virginia, and as the Coast Guard’s Liaison to US Naval Forces Europe, US Naval Forces Africa, and US Navy’s Sixth Fleet in Naples, Italy.

In 2017, RDML Chamie completed a one-year National Security Fellowship at the Harvard Kennedy School.  Previously, he received his MBA from the University of California, Irvine Graduate School of Management.  He is a graduate of the Naval War College Command and Staff program, non-resident course. 

His military awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with operational device, among other personal, campaign, and unit awards.  In 2023, RDML Chamie was designated an honorary Chief Petty Officer by the Commandant and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard.  RDML Chamie was the 2002 Coast Guard Elite Athlete of the Year in the sport of powerlifting.
