Remarks:
This station was built in 1855 at a site originally described as "eight miles east of Fire Island light." Subsequent to 1925, the position of the station was listed as "abreast of Sayville and east eight and one-quarter miles of Fire Island Light."
In 1938, the station was first listed as an inactive station and remained so until World War II. A hurricane which swept the Atlantic coast in September of 1938 demolished the boathouse. The site was abandoned in 1946 and was purchased by the Home Guardian Company of New York.
Keepers:
The original keeper was Samuel T. Green who was appointed in 1856, but his date of departure is not known. He was followed by Edmund Brown (appointed at the age of 60 with experience as a "bargeman, surfman, etc." on July 12, 1869, he served until he was removed on March 29, 1875). Then came James Baker (appointed April 14, 1875, he served until dismissed October 16, 1882), James S. Baker (September 27, 1882 until his death "from disease contracted in line of duty" on December 24, 1896), George E. Goddard (appointed April 2, 1897 until his retirement March 26, 1915 with more than thirty years’ of service and more than 64 years in age), Maurice C. Baker (appointed October 1, 1915 and served until his death April 11, 1924). The station had no keeper until Chief Boatswains Mate N. F. White was appointed in 1928. Boatswain J. M. Odin was in charge in 1937.
