Remarks:
In 1878 lifeboat stations were authorized for the communities of Manistee and Ludington, followed by Frankfort in 1882; the Coast Guard has been standing watch for mariners in distress throughout the region ever since. Station Ludington has changed over the years and was upgraded from a small, seasonal detachment to a full time, year-round station. In addition to its primary area of responsibility from Big Sable Point to Stoney Lake , Station Ludington provides rescue for an overall operational area of approximately 35 nautical miles of coastline encompassing 1,050 square miles, and spanning two counties.
A new station building was built and commissioned in April 2004; the 4,200 square foot facility greatly enhanced the efficiency and operational capabilities of the unit, as well as improve habitability for the crew. With a crew complement of sixteen active duty, four reservists, and more than twenty Auxiliary members (Auxiliary Flotilla 20-06), the station handles approximately 100 Search and Rescue cases per year and over 150 boardings.
Station Ludington is located at the center of the eastern shoreline of Lake Michigan.
