USS Charleston (PG-51)
History:
At the end of World War II, the Coast Guard sent a request to the Navy regarding whether or not the service could obtain the patrol gunboat Charleston as a replacement for the sunken cutter Alexander Hamilton, lost in action off Greenland in 1942. The Charleston was the basis for the design of the 327-foot Treasury Class cutters, including Hamilton, that were built in the 1930s. Due to personnel shortages, however, the Coast Guard withdrew their request after receiving a favorable response from the Navy.
