Franklin Pierce, 1853

Franklin Pierce (1804 - 1869) was the fourteenth President of the United States.  He served in that office from 1853 to 1857.

Tender History:

The tender Franklin Pierce began life as the privately-owned Zendrico, an 80-ton, wooden-hulled schooner.  She was purchased by the Lighthouse Establishment in February 1853 and her hull was then coppered.  She was commissioned that same year and renamed the Franklin Pierce.  She was assigned to the 1st Lighthouse District and served until December 1865.

She was declared unseaworthy in December, 1865, and was sold at Portland, Maine.  She was holed by rocks near Green Islands in Maine and sank in May, 1891.
