Yard Patrol Vessels Manned by Coast Guard crews, 1941-1946


Under an agreement made between the Commandant of the Coast Guard and the Chief of Naval Operations, the Coast Guard agreed to supply officers and crewmen for a number of Yard Patrol-class vessels beginning on 14 December 1941.  Ultimately Coast Guard crews manned a total of 40 of these craft and they were used for inshore and harbor patrol activities.  

Note, however, that even with Coast Guard crews these YPs remained commissioned US Navy vessels. 


YP-28
A 75-foot wooden hull patrol boat.  This vessel was originally a Coast Guard vessel, CG-225, that was turned over to the Ninth Naval District, in June, 1934.  She was then used as a Naval Reserve training ship until October, 1940.  The YP-28 reported at San Juan on 12 May 1941.  A 27 April 1943 memo noted, however, that she was "too small and lacking in characteristics suitable for adaptation to Inshore Patrol activities, particularly in regard to berthing facilities."  Her Coast Guard crew reported aboard on 28 April 1943 and she was assigned to the 10th Naval District for use as a "Harbor Patrol Craft."  Her commanding officer was ordered on 6 October 1944 to turn the YP-28 over to the Navy at the Frontier Base at San Juan, Puerto Rico, at which time her Coast Guard crew was removed.

YP-70
A 70-foot vessel, the former Gypsy, that was taken over by the Coast Guard on 9 February 1942 and returned to the Navy at Little Creek, Virginia, on 4 September 1944.

YP-75
A 75-foot vessel, the former Kooyong, saw service in the 4th Naval District.  She was taken over by the Coast Guard on 20 March 1942 and returned to the Navy on 1 September 1944 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

YP-93
Coast Guard crew reported aboard in February 1944 and were removed on 5 April 1946.  A 76-foot vessel that saw service in the 13th Naval District.  She was based out of Empire, Oregon.

YP-98
The former vessel Caroline.  Her Coast Guard crew reported aboard on an unknown date.  She was assigned to the 8th Naval District and was based out of Corpus Christi, Texas.  YP-98 was stricken from the list of Navy vessels on 28 July 1943.

YP-114
The former vessel Adventuress.  She was taken over by the Coast Guard on 26 December 1941 and was based out of Alameda, California.  She was returned to the Navy on 20 May 1942.

YP-115
The 45-foot vessel formerly named Kenny Lee.  She was taken over by the Coast Guard on 30 April 1943.  She was assigned to the 12th Naval District and was based out of Sausalito, California.  She was returned to the Navy on 8 July 1945.

YP-116
The former-Balboa.  She was taken over by the Coast Guard on 26 December 1941.  She was based at Alameda, California in the 12th Naval District.  She was returned to the Navy on an unknown date.

YP-120
The 54-foot former Borenna II.  She was taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 December 1941.  She was assigned to the 12th Naval District and was based out of Alameda, California.  She was reported as being in laid-up status in April, 1945.  She was placed out of service at Treasure Island on 3 May 1945.

YP-122
The 46-foot former Mary Kay, taken over by the Coast Guard on 31 December 1941.  She was assigned to the 12th Naval District and was based at Alameda, California.  She was assigned to coastal picket duty involving patrols outside the 3-mile limit from 7 September 1942 to 20 February 1944.  She was returned to the Navy in June, 1945.

YP-127
The 43-foot former Bounty, taken over by the Coast Guard on 26 December 1941.  She was assigned to the 12th Naval District and was based at Monterey, California.  She was returned to the Navy on 31 August 1945. 

YP-130
The 44-foot former June Emma.  Taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 December 1941 and assigned to the 12th Naval District.  She was returned to the Navy on 6 September 1945.

YP-131
The 83-foot former Sebre Las Olas, taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 July 1943.  She was assigned to the 11th Naval District and was based at Terminal Island, California.  She was returned to the Navy on 20 February 1944.

YP-134
The 43-foot former Cherie II, taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 December 1941.  She was returned to the Navy on an unknown date.

YP-135
The 51-foot former Armodor II, taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 December 1941.  She was assigned to the12th Naval District and was based at Alameda, California.  She was returned to the Navy on 20 May 1942.

YP-140
The 51-foot former Cormorant, taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 December 1941.  She was based at Seattle, Washington.  She was returned to the Navy on an unknown date.

YP-142
The 65-foot former-Hermit, taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 December 1941.  She was assigned to the12th Naval District and was based at Alameda, California.   She towed a disabled fishing boat to safety on 29 May 1944.  The YP-142 was returned to the Navy on 5 September 1945.

YP-143
The former Indolence, taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 December 1941.  She was assigned to the 12th Naval District and was based at Alameda, California.  She was returned to the Navy on an unknown date.

YP-197
The 114-foot ex-Game Commission patrol vessel Brown Bear acquired "in connection servicing aids to navigation and freighting equipment, supplies and personnel in San Juan Islands and Puget Sound area."  She had two diesel engines with a range of about 4,000 miles and had accommodations for 16 men.  She was equipped with a T-106 radio transmitter and RC receiver.  She also had a boom and derrick.  She was taken over by the Coast Guard on 5 January 1942 and saw service in Alaskan waters.  She was returned to the Navy on 2 November 1945. 

YP-198
The former vessel Eider taken over by the Coast Guard on 29 May 1942.  She was returned to the Navy on 26 October 1945.

YP-227
The 61-foot, former Mary C, taken over by the Coast Guard on 17 March 1942 in Hawaii.  She was returned to the Navy on 10 September 1945.

YP-250
A 64' 6" vessel, the former Spencer, that saw service in Ketchikan, Alaska.  Her Coast Guard crew reported aboard on 29 April 1942 and were removed in April, 1944.

YP-251
Taken over by the Coast Guard on 31 December 1941 and returned to the Navy on 24 October 1945.  She was based at Ketchikan, Alaska, and saw service as a patrol vessel in Alaskan waters.

YP-259
The former Scout VI and Josephine M III, a 78-foot vessel that was taken over by the Coast Guard on 9 December 1942.  She was assigned to the 4th Naval District and was based at Essington, Pennsylvania.  She was placed out of service on 19 August 1944 at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and laid up.

YP-260
The former Grey Gull, a 64-foot vessel taken over by the Coast Guard on 24 November 1942.  She was assigned to the 4th Naval District and was based at Cape May, New Jersey.  She was returned to the Navy on 4 December 1943.

YP-316
The former Sherman Rose, a vessel taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 July 1943.  She was assigned to the 11th Naval District and was based at Terminal Island, California.  She was returned to the Navy on an unknown date.

YP-323
The former Diana, a 71-foot vessel taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 July 1943.  She was assigned to the 11th Naval District and was based at Terminal Island, California.  She was returned to the Navy on an unknown date.

YP-324
The former New Roma, a 70-foot vessel taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 July 1943.  She was assigned to the 11th Naval District and was based at Terminal Island, California.  She was returned to the Navy on an unknown date.

YP-325
The 73-foot former Star of Monterey.  She was taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 July 1943 and was based at Terminal Island, California in the 12th Naval District.  The date that she was returned to the Navy is unknown.

YP-335
The former Charmaire, taken over by the Coast Guard on 26 February 1942.  She was originally assigned to Essington, Pennsylvania and on 10 July 1942 she was assigned to Coast Guard Station Atlantic City for "temporary rescue and observation work 40-50 miles offshore."  She was returned to the Navy on 13 April 1943.

YP-339
The 115-foot ex-Lotosland, taken over by the Coast Guard on 7 June 1943.  She was assigned to the 3rd Naval District and was based at Sandy Hook, New Jersey.  She was placed out of service in the 3rd Naval District for disposal by the War Shipping Administration on 17 October 1944.

YP-341
A 70-foot Navy vessel, the former La Gonave, operated by the Coast Guard from 3 March 1942 until 13 April 1943.  Originally based at Essington, Pennsylvania, her station was changed to the Atlantic City Coast Guard Station on 2 March 1943.

YP-361
A 36-foot vessel, the former Exposition King, was operated by the Coast Guard.  She was converted to a fireboat type (YAG) at some point during the war.  She was assigned to the 11th Naval District and was based at Terminal Island, California.  She was returned to the Navy on 20 February 1944.

YP-362
The 80-foot former Western Star, acquired from the Navy on 1 April 1944.  She was assigned to the 12th Naval District and was based at Monterey, California.  She was returned to the Navy on 14 October 1944.

YP-370
The 82-foot former Dante Alighieri.  She was taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 July 1943 and was based at Mare Island, California.  She was placed out of service on 12 October 1944.

YP-371
The 78-foot former Redeemer.  She was commissioned on 4 February 1944.  She was based at Mare Island, California.  She was returned to the Navy in April, 1946.

YP-381
The 88-foot former St. James, taken over by the Coast Guard on 15 July 1943.  She was based at Mare Island, California.  She was returned to the Navy on 25 August 1945.

YP-401
The former Monterey, a 110-foot vessel that the Coast Guard took over from the Navy on 22 January 1944.  She was assigned to the 17th Naval District and was based at Ketchikan, Alaska.  She conducted seven-day inshore patrols in an area from Cape Ommaney to Cape Muzon.  She was returned to the Navy on 24 October 1945.

YP-411
The former Sea Wolf.  She was taken over by the Coast Guard on an unknown date and was returned to the Navy in March, 1944.  Her Coast Guard crew then cross-decked to the USS Amethyst.

YP-677
A 133-foot vessel.  Her Coast Guard crew reported aboard in August 1944 and were removed on 14 July 1945.
