Vice Admiral James Pine

Born: October 19, 1885, at Cincinnati, Ohio

Appointments in Rank: Ensign, December 22, 1908; Lieutenant (jg), December 30, 1908; Lieutenant, May 21, 1920; LT. Commander, January 12, 1923; Commander, December 1, 1927; Captain, May 25, 1940; Rear Admiral, June 30, 1942; Retired as Vice Admiral, August, 1, 1947; Died February 21, 1953.

Assignments:

April 1909 - USCGC Tuscarora, Milwaukee

June 1910 - USCGC Thetis, Honolulu, made Alaskan cruises with this vessel in 1911 and 1912.

April 1913 - USCGC Seminole, Wilmington, D.C.

April 1914 - Supervisor of Anchorages, Chicago, Ill.

May 1915 - U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn., - duty.

Sept. 1919 - USCGC Acushnet, Woods Hole, Mass.

Nov. 1920 - Commanding Officer, USCGC Manhattan, New York, N.Y.

Sept. 1921 - Returned to U.S. Coast Guard Academy for duty.

Oct. 1924 - Assigned at Receiving Unit, Philadelphia, Pa.

May 1925 - Commanding Officer, Destroyer Fanning of Division 4 of the old Destroyer Force operated by the Coast Guard between 1924 and 1934 in an all out war against run runners.

July 1926 - USCGC Argus, New London, Conn.

Nov. 1927 - Commanding Officer, Destroyer Wainwright of Division 3.

July 1930 - Commanding Officer, USCGC Itasca, Honolulu.

April 1932 - Headquarters, Washington, D.C. (duty regarding Ordnance matters.)

July 1934 - Returned again to the USCG Academy for duty.

August 1937 - Commanding Officer, USCGC George M. Bibb

October 1938 - Headquarters, Washington, D.C.

July 1940 to July 1947 - Became Superintendent of the USCG Academy where he remained until he retired August 1, 1947.  He received the Legion of Merit on March 28, 1946.
