In 1958, Filipino American Manuel Tubella became the first Asian American and second minority Coast Guardsman to become an aviator in the Coast Guard. He transferred from the Marine Corps and received a commission as a LTJG in the Coast Guard Reserves. He would later become the first Asian-American officer at every rank from full lieutenant up to captain.
